Abaca is an owner run mobile camp operating between the Bale Mountains and Chebera Churchura, and offering the opportunity to experience everything this relatively untouched part of the country has to offer, from the striking desert landscapes and depressions of Danakil to the diverse wildlife and vistas of Bale Mountains National Park.
The brainchild of Peter Tetlow and Graeme Lemon, two highly experienced guides who have since the 1980s and until reasonably recently been working in Zimbabwe and then abroad, Abaca Private Mobile Camp is the result of decades worth of on-the-ground experience. Based in Ethiopia since 2010, it’s a collaboration designed to fill a gap in the Ethiopian safari market: a quest driven mobile safari set in some of the world’s most extraordinary wildernesses.
A genuine frontier experience, Abaca Private Mobile Camp is an entirely canvas affair, and consists of a mess tent and sleeping tents. Imported from South Africa, the tents are comfortable but basic, with sturdy canvas walls and floors, the latter reinforced by thick camping mats. Each tent contains double or twin beds, a veranda and en-suite facilities that include hot water and a flush-toilet.
Set and struck every few days, activities with Abaca Private Mobile Camp include game drives, guided walks, fly-pitch camping and sundowners.
